Occupied land owned by seigneurs and were told to plant crops, clear land and build a house.

Seigneurs
These noble men practically owned their habitants, and made them clear their land, plant crops and participate in yearly labor.
Seigneurs built houses for themselves, a flour mill and a church for their habitants to attend.
In order to enlist more settlers, the king gave land to Seigneurs so that they could create spaces for settlers to live.
Coureur de Bois
‘Runner of the woods’ are men of New France who ran throughout the woods in order to find and trade with the First Nations.

These New France men concluded that they would continue to sell their furs, even to the British colonies after the government forbid independent trading.
Merchants
When imported goods were received from the merchants, they would then trade with the First Nations for furs.

If they did not take a job as a blacksmith, shoemaker, baker, or other positions, merchants found a salary from shipping furs to France where they could gain a profit.
