Whitman uses more of an informal voice and word choice in his writing when compared to Hall. However, that counterbalance between the voice and structure of the poem can still be felt, as Whitman is a little more formal with his structure(uses more techniques) but more informal with his voice.
Whitman uses lots of metaphors in his poems, which gives the reader the ability to connect two different things Whitman is talking about at the same time. Whitman also uses lots of personification to help create a more lively tone in his poems.
Whitman has what can be seen as a generally more upbeat and positive tone to his poems even when talking about death in "O Captain! My Captain". The tone gives his poems a more positive feel when comparing them to Hall's poems.
