ingroup favoritism—the tendency to respond more positively to people from our ingroups than we do to people from outgroups.
-
the wives of the commanders, though they were woman called the handmaids filthy, disgusting whores. it was interesting how they saw the handmaids differently. some of these handmaids were doctors, business women and etc. but because they were handmaids they were cast into the out-group. Serena joy ( June commander) was a sweet, kind and caring person to women in her ingroup. which were women who were married to the commander, but women in her outgroup ( handmaids) believed she was cruel and narcissistic.
Ultimate attribution error ;people make trait contributions in ways that benefit their ingroups, just as they make trait contributions that benefit themselves.
when June run away, the commanders punished all the handmaids. because to them one person's bad behavior in the group determines everyone behavior. they started to believe that all the handmaids were planning to run as well and started giving them more punishments even w/o evidence that they wanted to run.

black sheep effect = Devaluation of an ingroup member who threaten the positive image and identity of the ingroup
one of the commanders who received oral sex from one of the handmaids were punished. he got his hand cut of due to his sin. this scene was important because it showed that the commanders wanted to keep this positive and strong identity. men were not supposed to be crazy about sex, it was women who were identified as lustful. this scene contradicted the whole belief of gilead and it was not taken lightly.
Authoritarianism = people who like things simple , and of traditional and conventional values.
June had a very authoritarianism way of living. she was simple, she liked to wear joggers and not brush her hair or even worry about selecting her clothes. she also held traditional values, by having Hannah baptized even though her mother ( June's mother ) was completely against baptism and begged June not to.
Social dominance orientation = variable that refers to the tendency to see and accept inequality among different groups
June hated Serena more than she hated Fred. This was not because Fred was the one who continuously raped her. This was because Fred was a man and Serena was a woman. She knew the injustice of women. and was supposed to not accept the inequality of the handmaids. but like all the wives of the commanders, Serena accepted the inequality of the handmaids. she saw them as wombs and not people. making it easy for her to not think about them at all.

Interdependence : a state in which the group members depend on each other for successful performance of the group goals.
when June brought her escape plan to the other handmaids they began to depend on each other. June assigned all the women-specific roles. they were told to obey their commanders and do what they were told. by doing that no one will suspect them. this was important because if one handmaid was suspected they were all punished. they were all depending on each other to follow their commanders rules ignorer to successfully escape gilead.
