Rational thought is based on clear reason and logical progression. Creativity, on the other hand, seems to be about intuition, hunches and generally messing around until a magical idea pops out of the ether and into your head. In the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, John, the narrator’s husband, could be described as representing the scientific approach and understanding of a medical professional. However, in the historical context of this story, doctors’ understanding of the causes of mental health problems, as well as how to treat these disorders was very vague. His treatment of his wife’s condition draws on the ‘rational’ thinking approach - events can be explained through reason and logic observed on the outside. On the other hand, the narrator is an example of a ‘creative’ thinker, something her husband tries to suppress. This relies on the interior world and a different thought process entirely.
