        Although Johnathan does not entirely lack work ethic, he does not take work seriously. Instead of working a corporate job, he would rather live frugally and do with his free time as he wishes.

        "He's always shirking his duties... he's often late too" (61).
        In Convenience Store Woman, Shiraha lacks any initiative to work whatsoever. He wants to be handed things in life by others instead of being successful on his own. In fact, he almost entirely lacks all internal drive.
      - "Bartleby, the Scrivener", by Herman Melville
        Despite Bartleby being a promising employee when he was first hired, as the days go on he refuses to do more and more of the lawyer's tasks. Ultimately, his refusal to work shows his lack of initiative when it comes to being successful.

        "In this world, money is freedom. Opting out is not a real choice" (206).
        This quotation shows Candace's willingness to work. It is evident that she defines her success by the amount of money she makes instead of doing what makes her happy.
      - The Remains of the Day, by Kazuo Ishiguro
        "'Dignity' has to do crucially with a butler's ability not to abandon the professional being he inhabits" (39).
        Stevens' extreme internal desire to be successful is beautifully encompassed in this quote. He is willing to be serious and attentive to his profession at all times no matter what.
      - How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, by Mohsin Hamid
        As marked by his extreme desire to get rich, the protagonist of the story will stop at nothing to be wealthy. The protagonist will even go so far as to evade his own morals just so that he can be "filthy rich".
