US foreign policy
THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Hamilton fish, continued his expansionist approach from William steward (sec of state). between 1869 and 1873, backed by business interests, the US attempted to establish a protectorate over the Dominican republic, adjacent to Cuba.
1869 actually offered itself for colonisation but congress refused. 1870 fed gov stimulated debate of expansion with exapnsion
those in favour argued it could be expolited for wea;t ad resources, sell its good ready to market there
fear that people regarded as inferior might one day be admitted into the union or that former colonies become states and reduce the influence of ethnocentric, american states. senate rejected the annexation of the republic.
THE FAR EAST
1867, US aquired the unhibated midaay island in the west pacifc, orginally to obtain suplies of guano to be uned in the manufacture of fertiliser + gunpowder
1868: buringame treaty was singed to promote trade with china. endorsed the free movement of people and free trade between the US + China, in part to stimulate Chinese immigration to work on railroad building in the USA
ALASKA
acquisition was opportunistic rather than planned. seward was already intrested in the idea --> change in russian policy opened the way.
the russian-american company had beceome an expencsive drain on resources. russia also fered the US might seize territooy anyway.
therefore made sense gain fincial reward + imprive relations with america, rather lose for nothing RUSSIA CEDED ALASKA FOR $7.2 million
denounced by politicians + the press as foolish + an expensive mistake. critics called to stewards folly or the polar bear garden. ATTITUDES SOON CHANGED

economic potential of the region, for fish, furs, mining and logging --> became apparent. ALASKA-YUKON GOLD RUSH in the late 1890s
