Emma Bovary, the protagonist of Madame Bovary, is the archetype of the 'new woman' as she doesn't present herself as a submissive wife and rather defies societal expectations by getting involved in various affairs. While 19th-century women were merely secondary figures, Emma proves otherwise; she is, in fact, the dominant figure of the household as she is ambitious, desirous and outspoken unlike Charles. Similar to Madame Bovary, Antigone is a rebellious character who goes against societal norms and gender roles by sticking to her beliefs.
