Department of Environment
Mission : To ensure sustainable development in the process of nation building.
Roles of the DOE
1) To prevent, remove, manage and improve pollution in accordance with the objectives of the Environmental Quality Act of 1974 and its regulations.
Some of initiative that DOE do in order to improve pollution, which is in implementing fines for those who damaging the environment.
2) In charge of carrying out the outcomes made by international environmental conventions
Vienna Convention for the protection of the Ozone Layer 1985, Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer 1987
Vision : Environmental Conservation for the Well-being of the People.
Environmental Policy
Importance of Environmental Policy
1) Helping everyone to stay within the law
Environmental policy also include laws that works to protect air, land, soil and water. Fines, jail time and community service are all the possible punishments for disobeying these laws.
2) Improving cost control
When the organizations activity produce major environmental harm, the costs of rehabilitation can be so high and can causing the organization to collapse.
3) Improving monitoring of environmental impacts
It keeps people been informed, assists them in maintaining the environment and warns them of the potential future issues.
Goal of Environmental Policy
For the environment protection, conservation, and improvement, as well as pollution prevention and control, and also the promotion of sustainable development.
Natural Hazards
Definition
Natural hazards are extreme natural phenomena that can lead to loss of life, severe property damage and disruption pf various human activities.
Types of Natural Hazards
Physical
An element or circumstance that has the potential to hurt people when they come into interaction with it.
Example : Slips, falls, electricity, noise and heat
Biological
Biological compounds that endanger the health of living organisms, especially humans.
Example : Bacteria, parasites and viruses.
Chemical
Commonly applied in the home and in variety of different areas.
Example : cosmetics, drugs and paints.
Psychosocial
A risk of work-related stress and can result in psychological or physical damage.
Example : Poor supervisor support and high job demands.
Disaster Risk Reduction
Goal of DRR
To reduce the damage caused by natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, droughts and cyclones, through an ethic of prevention, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction
Importance of applying DRR
1) To mitigate the effects of recent and future disasters.
To lessen the impact of current and future disaster, proper DRR system and solution are required.
For instance, the government is truly devoted to DRR and it is working hard to execute the priority areas
2) To protect the lives and livelihoods of communities and individuals who are particularly vulnerable to disasters
DRR will mitigate the negative consequences for those are most vulnerable.
For instances, the government made a several steps to reduce hazard risk and strengthen the country resilience which includes policies, plans and activities.
