Cell Membrane: Structure & Function
structure
double layer of phospholipids, the protiens are spread throughout membrane in a kinda mosaic like way. the protiens float around the semi-fluid(phospholipids fluid) some of the protiens span from one side of the membrane to the other
water travels through the aqua pores
some of the protiens and phospholipids have carbohydrate chains attached to them
the protiens have polar and non polar regions,
the hydrophilic heads are faced towards the outside of the bi layer cell membrane, the hydrophobic tails are faced towars the inside of the bi layer cell membrane
carbohydrate chains are used as cell identification markers
function
impermeable = nothing passes through :
permeable = most things past through
semi - permeable = smaller molecules can past through, like a sift
the cell membrane is discribed as being selectivly permiable- only certin molocules can pass through, these molocules arent determend by size
diffusion
osmosis
facilitated transport
active transport
hyper tonic
isotinic
hypotonic
