The Politics of Recognition (1994)
- How is individual formed
-- Within community: we understand who we are as individuals, only in relations to other individuals/identities; learn about others through ourselves
-- Dialogical understanding of self is critical to politics of recognition
- Active citizenship: requires us to engage with others; recognize others, in particular those in dominant/majority culture need to recognize minority cultures, and embrace difference
--Key to contemporary politics is the need to recognize others’ cultural difference
-- Cultural minorities can only flourish if their differences are recognized and accommodated within liberal states
Kymlicka: role as a citizen is to exercise your right, state should protect and preserve those rights, you have no responsibility to other citizens' as such

- Liberal Multiculturalism (Recognition of Difference): Recognition of groups + protections of rights to support different cultural identities, consistent with a liberal society (sovereignty of state and individual rights); group rights cannot violate set of fundamental rights nor can a group claim to be sovereign
