People of New France
Soldiers
The king wanted millitary in New France so, he proposed to some of the men to be seigneuries. Being a seigneury was something that would change peoples lives.
Lots of men only chose being in millitary because they needed to make a living. It was not a career that made you lots of money.
Lots of soldiers came to New France to protect them from the Haudenosaunee. New France was trying to grow into First Nations Territory and the First Nations were getting upset.
Fur Traders
Merchants
Most merchants were in the fur trade. The furs were imported to France and were traded the goods with the Innu, Anishinabe, and Ouendat along with other First Nations.
The fur trade merchants also traded with the coureurs de bois and other colonists wo traded furs for income. Merchants then would ship the furs to France for profit.
Merchants could be blacksmiths, shoemakers, masons, bakers, and buchers. There would be these shops allong the roads when you walked through town.
Voyagers
-
Voyagers were often men. The men would go from New Frace to the merchants of Montreal and the fur trade stations in the Great Lakes.
Coureur de Bois
The coureur de bois worked for themselves. In the beginning, New France's government motivated people to trade independently.
Eventually, the government made independent trading illegal. Still, the coureur de bois sold their furs in the British colonies, which had not made independent trading illegal.
Coureur de bois means "runner of the woods." This name comes from some men who were involved in the fur trade because they would run through the woods looking for First Nations to trade with.
The Sovereign Council
Governer
The governor was in charge of "external relations". One of the external relations, the governor was in charge of trade with the First Nations.
The governor controls the military. With controlling the military it was the governor's duty to defend and protect the colony.
Bishop of Quebec
The Bishop of Quebec provided spiritual and moral help, founded schools, hospitals, and orphanages. Just like Canada does today but instead of a Bishop we just have a prime minister.
The Bishop of Quebec had a big infuluence. They cunsulted the clergy before making decisions. Their reputation depended on their standing in the church.
The Bishop of Quebec represented the Chatolic Church. The church was inportant in New France and played an important role.
Intendant
Intendant means, chief administrator of the colony. Which explains wat they did, like how they would make sure everything was going good.
The Intendant would look for resources that could be shipped out to France. One of the main things that were transported from New France was animal skins.
The Intendant was in charge of keeping the colony in order. Like, helping make New France more independent.
Farmers
Habitants
Habitants farmed on land owned by seigneuries. They had to give a couple of days of work each year to the seigneuries.
Some of the hanitants did not farm because they found fur trade easyier to make money. Sometimes, the seigneurs had complaints about the habitants and went to court answering complits that they had on their responsibility.
The habitans also had to pay the seigeur's miller to gind the grain into flour. For the ability to create a farm the habitants had to clear the land, plant crops, and build a houes.
Seingneurs
Seigneurs owned land and had Habitants pay for it. To keep their land they had to recruit settlers, or habitants to live on the land.
The seigneurs also had to build a house, flour mill and a church for the habitants. The seigneurs almost always owned the habitants.
They received their land from the king of France. So most of the people that owned the land came from noble families and were men.
