B3 - Organisation + the Digestive system
Tissues + Organs
tissues
group of cells with similar structure and function
animal tissues include:
muscular tissue - contract to bring about movement
glandular tissue - produce substances such as enzymes or hormones
epithelial tissue - covers some parts of the body
organs
made of tissues
stomach, organ made of:
muscular tissue - churn contents of stomach
glandular tissue - produce digestive juices
epithelial tissue - to cover the outside and inside of stomach
pancreas, 2 types of glandular tissue
hormones to control blood sugar level
digestive enzymes
organ systems
made of several organs that work together
includes:
digestive system
circulatory system
gas exchange system
The human digestive system
responsible for changing food we eat from insoluble to soluble molecules, then absorbing them into the blood
muscular tube that includes:
glands (pancreas and salivary glands) produce digestive juice containing enzymes
stomach - where digestion occurs
liver - produces bile
small intestine - digestion occurs, has large number of villi where the absorption of soluble food occurs
large intestine - water is absorbed from undigested food, producing faeces
villi are adapted to be efficient, they have:
large surface area to absorb foods by active transport and diffusion
thin wall to provide short division path
good blood supply to carry food molecules away to maintain a concentration gradient
