Causes:
Long-term economic decline of the Soviet Union and inefficiencies within the system. (increased defence budget, soviet bankrupt, centralised economy)
Glasnost and Perestroika encouraged anti-Communism, which led to the lack of support for Communist parties within the satellite states.
Western influence, revolutionary sentiments were spread to the soviet satellite states.
"Sovietisation" Soviet repression on the states, eradicating local culture

Reforms: Communism to democracy, central planning to open markets, government control to private citizen.

Economic toward the core industrial countries of Western Europe and the EU.
2.Cold War:
Coup against Gorbachev
Allowing the six republics to leave the Soviet Union was seen as a sign of weakness by hard-line Communist leaders in the Politburo. They blamed Gorbachev and began to develop a plan to oust Gorbachev and attempt to retain authority before the Treaty could be signed on the 20 August.
