Inductive Bible Study: Application
Process
Know yourself!
Make sure your application is consistent with the text.
Think broadly about various aspects of your life where the truth connects.
Is it specific, concrete, measurable, accountable?
Put it to practice- "experience the text"!
Good question to ask yourself: How will I know when I have finished the application?
Difficulties
Taking into account Old and New Covenants.
Taking into account the context.
Don't be too generic!
Direct/Indirect Application
Generally, NT epistles apply more directly.
Generally, OT laws more indirect application.
Two Step Process
Context (maybe addressed to a limited group, or limited by requirement of history or culture
Additional revelation may limit the application: What does the rest of the Bible say?
Finzel, "The process of discovery the principles of truth in scripture that are meant to affect one's belief and behavior and diligently putting that truth into practice into one's life."
Live It!: How does the passage affect my life?
Meaning: what the author intended to communicate through the text (should be the same for all Christians)
Application: the response of the reader to the meaning of the inspired text (should reflect specific life situation, will vary from Christian to Christian)
Steps:
Observe how the principles in the text address the original situation.
Discover a parallel situation in a contemporary context.
Make your applications specific.
