Mumbo Jumbo

Reed often uses direct discourse, but without any quotation marks and often without attributing speech to a character. Though it can be difficult to distinguish between omniscient narration and free indirect discourse in general, Reed's writing in this novel also makes it difficult to distinguish direct discourse. As a result, degrees of subjectivity that might be clear in other novels are flattened here. Objective narrative accounts and conversations between character are indistinguishable on the page, as if they are one in the same.
