William Willard, deaf man founded Indiana institute for the education of the deaf and dumb as a private school 1843
The state took over which would secure it's future but cause problems
1844 legislation that created the Indian Institute gave govenor full authority to appoint tursutees, they selected superintendint
1845 1st super. James S. Brown hearing teacher from Ohio Institute for deaf
Thomas MacIntire took over in 1850s, served 27 years
Thomas was removed from his positioning 1897
Controversy - oralism vs manulaism, residential vs day schools were at peak
MacIntire had experience teaching in deaf institutions, and got to Indiapolis a month after Brown's resignation
Hints of MacIntire having friends in state govermnet
Deaf institution could've closed bc of civil war but govenor Morton borrowed bond money to keep it open
WIth the death of Morton, The democrats won the office appointing a new board of trustees that asked for Macinitre's resignation
Even tho he resigned that summer he enrolled all his pupils in the National deaf mute college, now Galluaget
fall of 1879 unprecedented amount of students attended the college, usually it was only 15
1886 new school for deaf was announced Evansville
Charles Kerney, member of the grad class of 1979 in Inidiana institution founded it
troubling bc it was assumed that every deaf student in Indiana would go to the Indian institute
Government funding helped schools build dorms but during civil war a shift toward day schools began
State funded schools used sign language bc oralism came from Europe and required too much attention and money
starting w small classes like the one created in Portland, Maine oralism schools began more popular and bigger
