Classification & types of optical fibres
Material used
Plastic Optical Fibers
Polymethylmethacrylate is used as a core material for the transmission of the light.
Glass Fibers :
consists of extremely fine glass fibers
Mode of propagation of light
Single-Mode Fibers
The structure of a typical single-mode fiber.
2) Cladding 125 µm diameter
3)Buffer 250 µm diameter
1) Core 8–9 µm diameter
4) Jacket 900 µm diameter
These fibers are used for long-distance transmission of signals.
Multimode Fibers
These fibers are used for short-distance transmission of signals.
Have a core of either 50 or 62.5 micron
Larger core gathers more light compared to single mode
Light reflects off the core and allows more signals to be transmitted
Refractive index
Step Index Fibers
Consists of a core surrounded by the cladding which has a single uniform index of refraction.
Graded Index Fibers
refractive index of the optical fiber decreases as the radial distance from the fiber axis increases.
