Causes of the Industrial Revolution
Agricultural Revolution
Natural Resources and New Methods and Technology
Natural Resources
Areas that benefited from the Industrial Revolution often had good natural resources such as coal, iron, harbors, and natural rivers to power machines. Coal and water were used to power machines, iron was used to construct machines and buildings, and harbors were used for trade.
New Methods and Technology
Seed Drill
The seed drill helped plant seeds more efficiently casing crops to grow more effectively and consistently.
Rotating Crops
Farmers would use a method called Rotating Crops to better manage the soil. They would first plant a crop such as wheat to exhaust the soil, then they would plant a root next year to bring back the nutrients, and then they would plant barley or clover to bring the nutrients back fully the next year. Then the farmers would repeat the cycle.
Enclosures
Enclosures helped protect private land. Livestock and plants were grown and kept there which helped them from getting eaten.
Advancements in Textile Production
Cloth was a necessity so new advancements had to be made in order to keep up with the growing population.
Flying Shuttle
The Flying Shuttle was created by John Kay in 1733 and it was a piece of wood that was attached to yarn that shot back and worth on wheels.
Spinning Jenny and Spinning Mule
The Spinning Jenny was a spinning wheel that produced 8 times as much thread at once.
The Spinning Mule was a more advanced Spinning Jenny that was water-powered that was more efficient that the Spinning Jenny and other machines.
Improvements in Transportation
Watt's Steam Engine
Before Watt, steam engines were very bulky and costed a lot to run so Watt created a new steam engine that used up fuel more efficiently
Water Transportation
Steam engines could powerboats and led to the first steamboats which were faster and could get people and supplies to areas quicker. It required less labor to operate these steamboats.
Road Transportation
Advancements in roads were created that helped better drain the streets and prevent mud. This also led to road companies creating turnpikes.
Railroads
The first railroads were steam driven cars on tracks that pulled people and cargo quicker and did not require any labor.
Railroads created lots of new job opportunities for people.
