Topic 5 - The majority of the worlds population living in urban areas.
Distribution of megacities
In the 1950 only two megacities now there is over 30. Some have population of over 20 million people. Only 5 per cent of the world population.
In more recent years there has been very rapid growth particularly in third world and eastern countries. Since 1990 there are two megacities in Africa for the first time. 80% of the worlds megacities are now in Asia, Latin America and Africa.
Urban growth rates
AC's
The 'baby boom' & building of houses led to urban sprawl & growth of cities.
London & Paris were first 'millionaire' cities (pop 1 mill)
Most sustained period was in the Industrial Revolution.
Most AC's have a population over 70% urban.
Cities in Europe & North America peaked in 1950's.
EDC's & LIDC's
Many of these people have children in the city.
Almost 200 million people moved to urban areas between 2000-2010.
Economic development has led to a rural-urban migration.
The highest levels of growth are Dhaka, 7%, Lagos 5.6%, Delhi, 4.6%.
Cities in Asia & Africa have overtaken some in Europe & North America.

What is a city?
Cites are human settlements. At the top of the settlement hierarchy. As more people live in a settlement, it becomes larges and gets more function and services. Settlements start of as farms, then villages, towns then cities.
In the UK a town becomes a city by the monarch granting it. Towns do not automatically become cities because of population size.
What is a megacity?
The rapid rate of growth in urban areas has lead to the creation of a number of cities with a population of over 10 million. They are often capital cities.
What is a world city?
Center for media and communications
Integration in global economy.
Major center for manufacturing
Important port facilities.
Home to an important stock exchange or major banks.
Highly rated university's, often specialising in research
Cultural opportunities, for example live music, cinema and opera.
Headquarters of multinational companies.
Center of innovation in business
Key words
Urbanisation - the process of towns and cities developing and becoming bigger as their population increases.
Function - a role performed by something; in this case may be administrative of related to a sphere of activity.
Megacity - a city that has a population over 10 million.
World city - considered an important nose in the global economic system. Has iconic statues and buildings. e.g. London
Population lining in urban cities
Globally, the number of city dwellers increases by 180,00 every day. By 2050 75% of the worlds population could be living in towns and cities.
