Causes of rapid urbanization in LIDCs
Rural to urban migration- people moving from rural areas to live in cities
Pull factors
More employment and better wages
Better health care and schools
Political and religious freedom
Stable government
Better access to food
More entertainment
More transport networks
Push factors
Lack of job opportunity's
Low wages
Few services ie schools, healthcare
Poor infustructure
Poor electricity
Crop faliure
Lack of clean water
After many have moved into cities they have children, this increases population in cities, especially in LIDCs whereas ACs seem to have an aging population
Consequences of rapid urban growth in LIDCs
Informal sector
This is jobs that are not formal- don't have regular salary, work hours and pensions- it may be illegal or unlicensed
ie shoe shiners, beach vendors, car washers and litter pickers
These jobs dont pay taxes and therefore dont contribute to the countries GNP
Informal housing
Slums and squatter settlements- built on land that doesn't belong to them- often isn't suitable for building on- river bed, close to industrial activity, steep unstable slopes, land next to railway.

No education
Hazards and bad health (industrial activity and land slides)
Children work in informal sector to support family
Disease spreads quickly
Crime is common
