Evaluate the role of war in shaping (or disrupting) the social, political, and economic development of the United States between 1776 and 1865.
Civil war era
- secessionism vs. unionism, people were forced to choose a side and that create social rifts in society
- the sides were also fractured politically based of union or confederate ties
- north's economic ties were industrial with free labor and the south had agricultural ties with slave labor
Civil War
-
-
Enslaved people changing roles- some loyal to their white masters, others hired by Union after fleeing
-
The role of war shaped how people thought of their regions, how states vs federal rights were going head to head, and how different the North was much more different to the South in economic growth (industry vs plantations)
Economy: increase of supply, food, and production of clothes, making ammunition and machinery (transportation of boats and trains)
Political: Democratic and Republican parties defined their parties (state vs federal rights). The North wanted all states to unite while the South wanted to have more strength with their state and region.
Social: the role of women of the household of men who went to war had to take on more responsibility so they began to work. Racial discrimination arose within the North since they want the African slaves to be freed yet they still do not treat them as equals. The South did not want to liberate them, so the people of each side were fighting for the slave's status.

The Mexican-American War created disputes over whether the newly admitted territories of California, New Mexico, and Texas should be slave states or free states. Tensions increased when some wanted California divided into two states due to the 36/30 parallel
The idea of Manifest Destiny also played a role in this west ward expansion as these settlers were under the impression that they were meant to colonize this new territory and build a life there
