Hitler Rises to Power in Germany
Mid 1920s- Mussolini became dictator of Italy
Adolf Hitler little-known political leader, early life had been a disappointment. WWI broke out, Hitler found a new beginning. He volunteered for German army, was twice awarded Iron Cross, medal for bravery.
The Rise of the Nazis
At the end of the war Hitler settled in Munich.
1919- joined a tiny right-wing political group. Shared his belief that Germany had to overturn the Treaty of Versailles and combat communism.
Later became National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi). Its policies formed German brand of fascism known as Nazism.
The party adopted the swastika, or hooked cross, as its symbol. The Nazis also set up private militia called the storm troopers or Brown Shirts.

1923- Hitler and the Nazis plotted to seize power in Munich inspired by Mussolini’s march on Rome.
The attempt failed, Hitler ended up in jail for less than 9 months.
He declared that non-Aryan “races,” such as Jews, Slavs, and Gypsies, were inferior. He called Versailles Treaty an outrage and vowed to regain German lands.
While in jail he wrote Mein Kampf (My Struggle). Talked about his beliefs and his goals for Germany. Hitler asserted that Germans, whom he incorrectly called “Aryans,” were a “master race.”
1924- left prison and revived Nazi Party. Most ignored him and his angry message until Great Depression ended the nation's brief postwar recovery
Economic effects of Great Depression helped Hitler’s cause, German people were desperate for a strong leader who would improve their lives.
Lebensraum- living space because according to Hitler, it was overcrowded. He promised space through imperialism rebuilding Germany’s military and conquering Eastern Europe and Russia.
What did Hitler believe were the rights and duties of the German master race? Hitler said that Germans were the master race and the Jews, Gypsies and Slaves were inferior. He said Germany needed more lebensraum and said he would get it by taking Eastern Europe and Russia.
Nationalism- in jail Hitler said he was going to be devout to their country and do things for the people.
More than 5 million copies of his book were sold by 1939.

What personal characteristics helped Hitler gain success as a leader? His personal characteristics were being very powerful and controlling. He had a leader mindset but used it in the wrong way.
Fascism- a system led by a dictator who rules forcefully using violence
Iron Cross- could be conferred on Germans and citizens of countries allied with Germany for exceptional bravery or leadership in face of the enemy.
