Political
people lost faith in the Weimar Republic and supported extremist parties
people saw democracy as weak
the Nazi vote increased - by 1932 they were the biggest party in the Reichstag
Hindenberg increasingly ruled by emergency decree
the Reichstag became paralysed, with a succession of Chancellors failing to achieve a majority
people looked for strong leadership - someone who could make decisions rather than gettign bogged down by debate
the government raised taxes and cut benefits
the upper classes feared the spread of communism and donated millions of marks to the Nazis
Economic
unemployment reached 6 million by 1932
50% of young people were unemployed
1000s of factories closed down
food prices became unaffordable to many
the middle classes feared the return of hyperinflation
production fell as people could not afford to buy things
many businesses struggled due to contracting markets
many farmenrs were in debt
Social
crime increased
shanty towns and temporary housing appeared in towns and cities across Germany
family income fell dramatically
people were starving and relied on soup kitchens for meals
standards of living fell and poverty increased
