Civil War
Created an incentive to free slaves; Lincoln was initially reluctant to, after the prayer the South would come back willingly expired, Lincoln realized there was no reason not to capitalize on Black manpower from the South via emancipation.
Hindered economic development; reconstruction costs. War destroyed infrastructure that had rebuilt at a considerable economic cost. The war also killed people which is bad for the economy b/c there were fewer workers.
