Work isn't success
Beloved
”And the strong hands went to work a fourth time, none too soon, for river water, seeping through any hole it chose, was spreading over Sethe’s hips.” -Page 99, Beloved
In Beloved Sethe is an escaped slave who gives birth beside a river while still knowing that at any moment, slavecatchers could find her. Sethe’s hard work to escape and bear another child ultimately however, fails to succeed at having a happy life with another child, because not all hard work is rewarded equally, and Sethe is forced to kill Beloved.
Bartleby The Scrivener
”I am a man who, from his youth upwards, has been filled with a profound conviction that the easiest way of life is the best” -Page 1
In Bartleby the Scrivener, Melvin expresses how he holds a belief that a life that is easy is the best. The fact that he desires this even though he himself has landed in a stable job, shows that a person going through hard work does not necessarily mean success in life.
