not everyone had extra money
out of 27 million families 21 million earned 3000 dollars a year and 6 million earned 1000 dollars a year
the top .1 percent owned 34% of the wealth

people were buying stuff they could not afford
anything could be bought with credit
but you would get charged with intrest
by 1929 1 million people in the US owned shares
stock market crash
the value of stocks fell dramatically over several days at the end of october
on october 28 and 29 values fell 23%
these days were knowns as black monday and black tuesday
over 16 million shares were sold on tuesday
many people lost all of their savings and ended up losing their homes
businesses had to lay off employees and go bankrupt
why
the economy had slowed down but the stock market continued to rise
the market had grown too fast and stocks were overvalued
growth in the market was not based on reality
the stocks were worth much more that the real value of the companies they represented
many people were borrowing money to buy stocks called margin
when the market began to fall they had to sell quickly in order to pay off their debts
this caused a domino effect which made more and more people need to sell
laissez fair means to leave alone and specifically for the government in most cases

in the 1920-1930 was banned because of the 18 amendmendment
prohibition ended with the passage of the 21st amendment in 1933
