Motion and Forces
Motion
Position describes the location of an object
A reference point is a location which you compare with other locations.
Describe where something is with a graph
Longitude and latiitude
Motion is the change of position over time
Position can change at different rates
speed is a measure of how fast something moves
calculating speed
velocity includes speed and direction
speed and direction can change over time
velocity time graphs
Forces change motion
A force is a push or pull
Types of forces
contact force
gravity
friction
a force that resists motion between 2 surfaces that are pressed together
When 1 object pushes or pulls another object by touching it.
The force of attraction between 2 masses
Balanced and unbalanced forces
The overall force acting on an object when all the forces are combined is called the net force
Interia
It is the resistance of an object to change in the speed or the direction of its motion.
Newtons laws
1st law
Objects at rest remain at rest, and objects in motion remain in motion with the same velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
2nd law
The acceleration of an object increases with increased force and decreases with increased mass. The direction in which and object accelerates is the same as the direction of the force.
3rd law
every time one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts a force that is equal in size and opposite in direction back on the first object.
Equations
Speed = distance/time
acceleration = final velocity- initial velocity/time
Equations
Force = mass x acceleration
momentum= mass x velocity
