Topic 4 - The components of ecosystems.
What is an ecosystem?
Ecosystem - area where living organisms and non-living elements interact with each other.
Biotic and abiotic elements of an ecosystem
Biotic
Animals, insects, birds & mammals
Plants, trees, grasses, mosses & algae - provides food and shelter of animals.
Micro-organisms, fungi, breaks down dead plants & animals - nutrients into environment.
Humans are living parts of ecosystems.
Abiotic
Sunshine & rain, photosynthesis - dependent on weather & climate.
Soils, store water and carbon nutrients, plants use.
Rocks, help in formation of soils. weathering releases nutrients stored to the ecosystem.
How are ecosystems interdependent
Climate
Plants - Sun gives energy to plants.
Animals - Reptiles need warmth to survive.
Soil - Rain falls to the ground
Plants
Soil - Plants decay and rot.
Animals - Animals pollinate flowers.
Climate - Plants give out oxygen
Soil
Plants - Plants take up nutrients
Animals - Soil is a food for worms
Climate - Water evaporates from the soil.
Animals
Plants - Insects pollinate flowers
Soil - Dead animals decompose.
Climate - Animals breath out carbon dioxide.
Key words
Biotic - living elements of an ecosystem.
Abiotic - non-living elements of an ecosystem
Fauna - animals in a ecosystem
Interdependence - when every form of life relies on other living things and the natural resources in it's environment. e.g. air, soil, water
Flora - plants in an ecosystem
