- - - - Some socialist theorists such as Stalin and Marx believed that the way to achieve worker ownership of the means of production was through temporary state ownership that would eventually be handed over to the workers. They theorized that the workers should take over and wielded the power of the state until capitalism has been completely defeated worldwide as to protect themselves from capitalist powers.
    - - Opposed to state ownership, some socialists like Pierre Joseph Proudhon and Auguste Blanqui called for direct worker ownership via cooperative or syndicalist ownership as opposed to state ownership. They theorized that direct worker control is superior to state control because it prevents the possibility for the state to become degenerated thus reversing the achieval of socialism.
