Criminogenic capitalism
Crime is in enitvatable in a captitalist society because by its nature it causes crime
Capitalism is based on the explotation of the working class
Poverty may mean crime is the only way the working class can survive
Crime may be the only way to obtain consumer goods
Alienation and lack of control over their lives may lead to frustration and aggression
"dog eat dog" system of ruthless competiton
Ideological functions of crime and law
Pearce laws often benefit the ruling class by giving capitalism a "caring" face
False class consciousness
Blames the criminals rather than the capitalist for their problems
State and law making
Law making/enforcement serving the interest of the working class
Ruling class also have the power to prevent the introduction of lows that would threaten their interest
Evaluation of Marxism
Not all capitalist societies have high crime rates
Criminal justice system sometimes act against the interest of the capitalist
Too deterministic
Ignores intra class crimes
Ignores the other factors such as ethnicy and gender etc
