Definition: tear in tunica albuginea, protective layer surrounding the corpus cavernosum and corpora cavernosa. Sometimes involves the corpus cavernosum

Signs and symptoms

Cause: Blunt trauma to the erect penis

Popping or cracking sound on impact

Extreme pain that may or may not persist

Immediate loss of erection

Bruising and edema

Blood in urine or penis tip

Diagnosis: Ultrasound, MRI, retrograde urethrogram (if suspect damage to urethra)

Treatment: Surgical repair of tunica albuginea

Potential complications

Curved penis + scar tissue

Fistulas

Erectile dysfunction

Painful erection

Urinary problems

Difficulty getting and keeping an erection

Surgery lowers risk of complications and increases likelihood of return of normal sexual and urinary function

Nursing Priorities

Acute pain: Post-surgical

Risk of complications: bleeding, wound dehiscence

Risk for impaired urinary function

Anxiety related to surgical procedure and outcome (self-esteem, poor quality of life)

2-3 days in hospital

Infection

no intercourse for 1 month
