The Human Rights Act 1998 sets out a minimum standard of how the government should treat you
It makes sure that they think about meeting your basic rights when they do their job, this includes when they use other laws
Parliament must think about whether a new law follows the Human Rights Act before it comes into force
The Human Rights Act 1998 applies to all public authorities such as Local Authorities, police and NHS staff
Article 2- right to life
Article 3- freedom from torture and inhumane or degrading treatment
Article 4- freedom from slavery
Article 5- right to liberty and security
Article 6- right to a fair trial
Article 7- no punishment without law
Article 8- right to private and family life
Article 9- freedom of thought, belief and religion
Article 10- freedom of expression
Article 11- freedom of assembly and association
Article 12- right to marry
Article 14- protection from discrimination
A protocol to the Convention is a text which adds one or more rights to the original Convention or amends certain of its provisions.
