Logos
In a Plea for Captain John Brown Thoreau uses Logos to pose questions so illogical it makes the reader understand how illogical societal views on the government are at this time stating "What shall we think of a government to which all the truly brave and just men in the land are enemies, standing between it and those whom it oppresses? A government that pretends to be Christian and crucifies a million Christs every day"(Thoreau). Thoreau points out how illogical it is to belive in a government who states they are one thing then does the other, he highlights the hypocricy of the law through this making the reader understand how illogical they are referring to him as logical.

Logos is a part of the triple rhetoric it is a form of persuasion speakers, writers, etc. may take where they use the source of logical reasoning to persuade audiences to agree with their opinion. They can also do this through irony and humor to make something sound so illogical it makes the audience realize the logical response.

Frederick Douglas uses persuasive rhetoric in the form of logos to state things that many would so blatantly agree with that when he discusses the facts of the case being done in the opposite manner it makes the reader realize the wrongdoings partake with those higher in society with legal authority. Douglas states "All will agree …and not to defeat those ends" (Douglas 277) He logically knows all readers will agree with one of the two options he offers in his statement he uses that first initial statement of agreement to further enhance his idea to show people why his thought process is logical because it corresponds with his opening statement that applies to all readers.
