3.4 Metamorphic Rock
Agents of metamorphism
Heat
- Heat provides the energy needed to drive chemical reactions.
- Heat for metamorphism comes from magma or hpchnage in temperature from depth.
- When exposed to high temperatures minerals recrystallize and turn into other minerals.
Pressure (Stress)
- Pressure increases with depth just like heat
- Pressure causes rocks to flow rather than to fracture
- Horizontal collisions are caused by moving tectonic plates to create pressure.
Reactions in solution
- When hot, water based solution escape from a mass of magma it is called hydrothermal solutions.
- Hot fluid promote recrystallization by dissolving original minerals and depositing new ones.
