Push: lynching. a public killing carried out by a mob. Used as a tool of intimidation and terror. Estimates of 3-4 thousand people that were killed by lynching. Often due to minor offenses such as an African American voting
Push: White supremacist groups enforcing disenfranchisement on blacks. Taxed them if they wanted the right to vote. Violence and intimidation
Push: Sharecropping. Southern plantation owners are looking for cheap labor. Sharecropping becomes the dominant form of economy in southern agriculture

Great Migration
1910 90% of all African Americans lived in the south, and 75% lived on farms
WWI 500,000 African Americans moved from the South to Northern cities.
1920s 800,000 African Americans moved from Southern states to Northern cities.

In the 1920’s, immigration quotas were placed and impacted the number of Jewish, Italian, Russian, Greek, Polish and Slavic immigrants that were allowed to immigrate to America. This law was passed out of fear of foreign radicals and a desire to remain isolated from world conflict.
