Was a return to the political system of the Ancien Régime that was imposed after Napoleon's defeat in 1815
The supporters of the Restoration believed that the monarch was the only person capable of leading a country
Popular sovereignty and constitutions could no longer exist because they limited the power of the monarchy
European powers met at the 1814–1815 Congress of Vienna
There they adopted a series of measures
Europe's borders were changed
The European powers agreed to support any monarch who was threatened by revolution or any attempt to limit his or her power
Absolute monarchies were reinstated
During the Restoration, two European alliances were formed
