"The Oracle and the Curse" by Caleb Smith seeks to explain Habermas' theory of publics and counter publics. The Oracle, in this case, refers to anyone working in the administration of law, i.e. elected officials, government officers, etc. The Curse refers to these counter publics -- criminals, the enslaved, activists, etc.
These Oracles act with allegiance to the governmental and legal system. The Curse acts with allegiance to the People, refusing to allow the established law define and dictate what is right and wrong.
