Emma Cervantes Per 6, Nervous System
Major Functions of the Nervous System-
The major functions mostly include controlling, regulatory and communication systems
Major divisions and subdivisions
central nervous system
(CNS)- Brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
(PNS)- made up of nerves in which branch from the spinal cord into all parts of the body
Tissue-
Nervous tissue
- contains neurons(nerve cells), neuroglial cells, ependymal cells, and satellite cells
Classification of neurons-
-
neurons that are found in the human body are/can be divided into 3 different groups, which are sensory neurons, motor neurons, and inter neurons.
Major parts and functions of the brain-
The major parts include the cerebrum( left and right cerebral hemispheres), the cerebellum, and the brain stem(medulla oblongata, pons and spinal cord
The major functions include thought, memory, emotion, motor skills, vision, touch, temperature, breathing and, hunger.
Major parts and functions of the spinal cord-
The major parts include the cervical(neck), thoracic(chest), and lumbar which is the lower back region.
The major functions are sensory, motor, as well as autonomic message between the whole body and brain
Action potential & the Nerve Impulse
Action potential is when a neuron send information to an axon that is away from the cell body
Nerve impulse is a coding signal that come from a nerve cell to an effector.
Cranial nerves
-Trochlear nerve
-Trigeminal nerve
-Oculomotor nerve
-Abducens nerve
-Optic nerve
-Facial nerve
-Olfactory nerve
-Vestibulocochlear nerve.
Spinal nerves
There are 31 spinal nerves, these nerves help to control motor, sensory and other functions
Neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters act as messengers throughout the body. They are able to transmit signals from nerve cells to target
Compare & contrast the autonomic nervous system
The somatic system cause contraction of skeletal muscles, while the autonomic system controls cardiac and smooth muscle, and glandular tissue.
Reflex arc
Major parts are sensory receptor, sensory neuron, integration center, motor neuron, and effector target.
