Cranial & Spinal Nerves
-
- Twelve pairs of cranial nerves rise from the underside of the brain.
- Most of the mixed nerves, contain sensory and motor nerve fibers.
^ Some are only sensory while others are primarily motor.
Sensory & Motor nerve fibers:
Sensory nerves: carry impulses from sensory receptors towards the brain.
Motor nerves: carry impulses away from the brain to muscles and glands.-The twelve pairs of the cranial nerve are identified by name and number.
- The numbers are in order from superior to inferior.
The first pair arises from the cerebrum, while the second is from the thalamus.
- Most arise from the brain stem. :!:
Spinal Nerves
In total there are 31 pairs that belong to the Spinal Nerves.
- All pairs except the first are mixed nerves.
- These pairs are grouped according to the level they arise from.
For instance,
8 pairs of the cervical nerves
12 pairs of thoracic nerves
5 pairs of lumbar nerves
5 pairs of sacral nerves
1 pair of coccygeal nerves.
