The Mental Health Crisis (Sierra)
Rape Culture on college campus (madeline)
Sexual violence has been one of the longstanding challenges in psychiatric facilities.
Whether its from another patient of from staff members, sexual violence is more pervasive than expected and commonly not bought attention to.
¨In a 2005 study 8% of patients reported being forced into sexual contact by another patient while psychiatrically hospitalized, and 3% reported sexual coercion by a staff member. In a 2012 national survey of state psychiatric hospital directors, participants estimated that within the previous year, 7% of patients had been victims of major sexual misconduct ¨(Barenett).

¨One UK study revealed that more than 13% of psychiatric inpatients engaged in some type of sexual behavior during the first 2 weeks of their stay, with indecent exposure and non consensual sexual touching being most common ¨(Barnett).
¨In 2018, the United Kingdom Care Quality Commission published a study revealing that 273 alleged sexual assaults in psychiatric facilities were reported to the National Health Service during a 3-month period¨(Barenett).
Most instances go unreported to police or other authorities due to the fear of being dismissed and shame, because patients are ¨mentally ill" and unbelievable and are´nt reliable.
its not always the patients that are in danger of sexual violence but sometime the staff member themselves had reports of sexual assaults.
Capital Punishment (Caroline)
capital punishment is not used for Rape
crimes
many believe in order to prevent crimes as violent as rape capital punishment is necessary to scare people. In foreign countries this however can result in women getting stoned for not being raped but committing adultery. (Pakistan)
capital punishment has been proven to have little to no effect on crimes against women. "Capital punishments also reduce the chances of the victim getting justice. Due to the severity of the punishment if convicted, lack of evidence and doubt regarding the integrity of the victim"
Does having capital punishment for rape change the victim-blaming that rape victims already endure? or is it too controversial to change the way rape culture is perceived.
People with mental illness at the time of their of the crime are not eligible for the death penalty.
they are still subject to a life time in jail without parole
¨Although the ABA does not take a position supporting or opposing the death penalty generally, our policy is based largely on the concept that the execution of people with severe mental illness is no more justifiable than executing people with intellectual disabilities or juveniles. Executing defendants belonging to one of these two groups has been held unconstitutional as our society considers both groups less morally culpable than the “worst of the worst” murderers for whom the death penalty is intended, less able to appreciate the consequences of their actions, less able to participate fully in their own defense, and more likely to be wrongfully convicted¨(ABA).

Many people agree with this policy due to the instance where people with mental disorders that are sentenced to death don´t receive the same challenge of facing the nature of their conduct or ¨conform their behavior to the requirements of the law¨(ABA).
