Assessing the Influence of Culture in a ISD
Tangible
Behavior
We respect and celebrate holidays and special days from both Western and Chinese cultures out of respect for students and families. We celebrate Christmas and Halloween, while also celebrating Chinese New Year.
We take part in many different culture celebrations for staff and students birthdays. Gift giving of Red Envelopes and other Chinese traditions are held in the school out of respect for our local staff and families.
We have special disciplinary issues in place for students because of their language struggles. Students in our school are very surrounded by Chinese culture especially at home, so their language skills can be lacking. This cause many students to fall behind so we must be diligent in fixing student behaviors like changing computer text to Chinese, or constantly using translation features or asking other students for help.
Verbal
Teachers respect students mother tongue, but also have rules in place about what are proper times to use mother tongue and when students are required to use English.
Tech must be monitored to assure students are not installing translation software that can stunt their learning.
Our school rules and handbook discuss rules and regulations involving usage of mother tongue during school. This makes sure all students, teachers, and families are on the same page.
Visual
Facilities represent all International Students who go to ISD. We have flags from each students countries so they feel represented, and that their culture is acknowledged by the school
Our facilities very much follow traditional western styles. However, the school must also follow the rules of Feng Shui. This means distances, sizes, etc must all match.
Our students all must follow dress code rules to wear school uniforms. We do have certain days throughout the year that students can wear clothing that represent their country and culture.
