Cyberbullying: What Parents Need to Know
Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology.
Cyberbullying can also be anonymous making it harder to stop it from happening.
Examples can be mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.
It use cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites.
Often for children the bullying does not stop online.
Children have a harder time getting away from cyber bullying.
It also has a greater audience.
It is also harder to delete or get rid of.
Children who are cyber bullied may:
Use alcohol and drugs
Skip school
Experience in-person bullying
Be unwilling to attend school
Receive poor grades
Have lower self-esteem
Have more health problems
9% of students in grades 6–12 experienced cyberbullying.
It has to be reported for it to stop.
