Submission (1795-1918)
Polish nationalism remained alive during the 19th century, creating plenty of art and causing many rebellions.
With the assistance of national, the Prussian parts of Poland were briefly restored as the Duchy of Warsaw (1807-1815).
Under Russia, it was a vassal for a while before being annexed. Under Austria, the Polish province of Galicia had a fair degree of autonomy. Prussia tried to erase Polish culture and Germanize the region.

To escape noble oppression, many Slavic peasants fled to the most inhabited parts of the Eastern Europe, creating self-governing societies and becoming known as the cossacks.
Out of 3.5 million Jews before the war, 3 million were killed, alongside other 2 million Polish citizens, making up 1/5 of the pre-war population.
