Global Experience, traumatic experience, the uses of dream and different…
Global Experience
NW
That when Natalie is trying to talk to Nathan about old memories with their friends he snapped at her saying "You don’t know nothing about me", which end the conversation where he is really attacking natalie verbally
that for Natalie she had to change from the name Keisha to get herself from her past life, she was embarrassed of who she was and who she was friends with.
When Natalie is talking to Nathan he tells her "my dreams is my dream. you get me? your dreams is your dream. you can't dream my dream"(smith pg. 381). which was him saying they have two separate dreams that she can't be apart of or even to understand his life
That Leah told everyone that "i am the sole author" which was her defining her life and taking control of it. which is something that is sometime uncommon because she told it to everyone
The Vegetarian
Yeong-hye was treated like an object when it came to her brother-in-law who treated her body like an object. but also her husband treated her like she was an embarrassment and he didn't like to bring her anywhere
towards the end of the book, Yeong-hye wanted to transform into a tree/plant because meat represents a brunch of violence and that plants were a way she wanted to a calm life and escape her past
Yeong-hye had two different times where she was breaking social norms. The first one would be the fact that she become a Vegetarian which is so uncommon in the Korean culture/her family culture. -another time was Yeong-hye doesn't like wearing a bra is an early example of both her desire to break social norms which Mr. Cheong made him upset but she was happy because she wanted to control her own body.
Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead
That "Janina" was seen as a crazy old lady that no one wanted to pay attention to. such as when she tried to voice her opinion about the hunters, she was just brushed off because her opinion did not matter to what the hunters did. also she was treated like she didn't matter cause she was a woman.
Big foot was a character who could be seen as someone who is hollow because of his behavior, he would look at the forest like it was a product ready to be sold and he never truly cared enough about it.
That Janina was seen as a crazy old lady who was obsessed with studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake. But in reality she was someone who planned murder and no one thought it was her. so she was breaking the social norms because of how old she was no one thought it was her.
Exit West
Nadia and Saeed would be doing thing that was outside of their religion such as staying together in the same house when they are not married and kissing and other acts of things that aren't appropriate for their laws in their religion.
That Nadia was breaking social norms and also her religion norms because she would wear all black clothes so no guys wanted to talk to her. but she also was not really into praying which was something big for her religion.
Kafka on the shore
Hoshino had the idea of hollow man by saying "People who fill up that lack of imagination with heartless bits of straw, not even aware of what they're doing"
-
Kafka wanted to change the fate that his father gave him, so he travel all the way to the island of Shikoku to find a better life, and escape his past for the better. which has him going on an adventure to try to find the better life
That Kafka has a very vivid dreams where he is stuck in a limbo where he has met soldiers from the war and has had an encounter with sakura, he says "instead, I dream of sakura. or is it a dream? its all so vivid, clear, and consistent" (Murakami pgs 368-370)
Kafka had the privilege of being able to run away from home without a big amount of consequences. He knew how to survive and how to adapt to the changes around him. but also he had money from his father watch and met people such as oshima and miss saeki who protected him from the police.
Go, Went, Gone
That Richard was living a life where in the beginning he was doing nothing for anyone and just continued to do that for a while. so he was like hollow because he didn't open his eyes to the world.
This Mournable Body
that tambu whole village was treated as a "one-time show" when it came to the people who didn't understand a certain dance that was only performed by men but they wanted to see women. which caused a lot of problems when it came to the dance. which caused a problem with her mother.
traumatic experience
-
Yeong-hye was abused by her father actions to her which caused her to become like an empty shell of nothing. another trauma event was all of the vivid memories and dreams that happened to her in her past.
Kafka had the trauma of his father saying that his fate would be that he would kill him so he could be with his mother and sister. so his whole life was him living in fear of that fate becoming reality
this could be a personal thing, but for Janina her trauma would be that she never knew what happened to her dogs and that big foot just watched be so helpless on trying to know where her dogs were. so she live knowing that they were dead and she was upset from it
that Nadia and Saeed had to live in a country where violence was happening everywhere. but Saeed had where his mother died because of a stray bullet so he has trauma from his mother. but for Nadia it could've been from her cousin being blown to bits when he came home to visit.
that all the refugees that were coming from their own country all suffer from a type of trauma such, the inability to know what is going to happen to them once they go to berlin.
There are two types of trauma from two characters. The first one would be Michel who is Leah husband, his would be that because he is a black man he had to go through more of a struggle in this country than Leah. But on Leah side it could be when she got pregnant and got an abortion. which she was fine with it but it could be that when Michel told her about children it could've reminder her of a time she didn't want to remember.

privilege lifestyle
Richard has a stable life and has the privilege to be able to do a lot of things since he was a white man who just retired. But also Richard has "time---plain and simple. time to travel..to read books. Time to listen to music"(Erpenbeck pg. 3). which is something the asylum seekers don't have.

Anger
That Nadia had a terrible event happen to her at the bank, which left her in a phase where she didn't know what to do but she was left frustrated and disgusted. which caused her to ask Saeed if "he had a gun". Another example would be that Saeed was frustrated
Richard was angry at Osarobo because he was late to his meeting with Richard to play the piano and he started questioning why he even wanted to try in the first place and was wondering what is more important than this meeting.
Janina was a character who would take the place for animals and her anger came from the hunters not valuing the life of animals. which caused her to voice her opinion about everything and even take revenge on the people who killed her little girls by killing them.
Janina was against justice because she didn't trust anyone to do anything right, so she took her own problem and solved it by herself. she didn't care if she was breaking laws she wanted to get justice for herself since no one could do it for her.
