Anthropology part 2
social diversity
-
causal
In 2004, a study was conducted to view the influence of racial and opinion composition in small group discussion. They wrote opposing opinions and had black and white participants read them. When a black person read it to a white group they found it led to broader thinking and consideration of alternatives.
Criteria: experimental based, smaller numbers, few variables
In 2006, a study was conducted to view the impact of racial diversity on small decision making groups. The groups with racial diversity in a murder-mystery game significantly outperformed the groups with no racial diversity.
In a 2006 study of jury decision making, Samuel Sommers -a social psychologist- found that racially diverse groups exchanged a wider range of information in deliberation about a sexual assault case than the all-white groups. The diverse juries were better at considering case facts, made fewer errors recalling relevant information, and displayed a greater openness to discussing the role of race in the case
A study was done in the university of Illinois where 186 people were asked whether they were a republican or a democrat, and then read a murder mystery and were asked to decide who they thought commited the crime. The people were told to prepare for a meeting with another person who disagreed with their opinion, and that they would have to come to an agreement. Half were told that they were talking to the opposing political party, and half were told they were talking to a member of their own. People prepared more for conversations with others of the opposite party, and less when told they were convincing someone from their own party.
Anticipating a difference between thinking of 2 different groups makes you work harder, leads to more communication, and broader thinking.

Stage-Model Theory

Definition: Stage Model Theory proposes that people progress through three stages of ethnic identity.
Criticised for not applying to all situations. One may never go through all stages or stay in on forever.
