Pharrell Williams - freedom
Representation
ethnic minorities
many images of black slaves working hard and being controlled
during these scenes, there is a desaturation of the colour and Pharrell is shown with angry facial expressions, this shows he is representing slavery as a sad negative issue that he is passionate about
women
shots of women working hard in factories etc maybe a reference to sweat shops where people were forced to work due to their poverty but they worked laborious hours for very low pay
children
references to child labour, we see children who appear to be working and they have dusty faces etc
Freedom
shows many example of people who don't have freedom and who are being enslaved by somebody else
these images are juxtaposed by many shots of people or things that are free
lots of loosely framed, long shots of animals, such as a cheetah running or a wale, that emphasise their freedom and ability to move and be uncontrolled
there is an image of a young boy in school who appears to be feeling trapped perhaps communicating the idea of freedom is relative to the part of the world you are in
Pharrell himself
low angle shots - idea of power and dominance
passionate, forceful body language & facial expressions - communicate the strength of his feelings on the issue
plain blue clothing with blue filtered shots - he blends in to background, not represented as being the centre of attention which emphasises this his message is more important than himself and his appearance
use of artistic, symbolic visuals - connote that he is an artistic creative singer
Intertextual references
perhaps to engage a more educated audience
A girl in red head scarf - a reference to someone named 'the afghan girl' who's picture was taken at a refugee camp and made its way around the world into many magazines etc, the use of the image helps reinforce the message about empathising with people who have had difficult experiences to do with culture
Lego scene with the tank - based on a real photo/event in China where a man stood in front of a tank to protest the government declaring martial law, communicates the themes of freedom, politics and history, represents Pharrell as being educated and political
footage of Muhammed Ali - famous for being an incredible boxer, standing up for ethnic minorities and being drafted to war and refusing to go as he wanted peace and didn't believe in war
model scene - dressed up nicely and stood in a particular way that makes them seem like they're there to be looked at but as Pharrell sings about freedom they rip of their wigs and walk away, breaking the formation, represents the idea of forced conformity, communicates the message of breaking free from what society expects from you
Culture
lots of different ethnicities, ages and cultures shown
adds to the theme of diversity and draws global links
represents Pharrell as someone who embraces diversity and also ethnicity and our culture as something diverse
Range of random shots
allows and invites audiences to interpret the video in their own way
one of the messages may be that they want the audience to really think about the video and the concept of freedom rather than just tell the audience themselves
