THE SECONDARY DATA SOURCES :pencil2:
Secondary Data in Research
Utilized to serve three purpose of research project. Used as sole basis for a research study, especially research of historical data.
Advantages
Particularly true when electronic retrieval such as internet is used to access digitally stored data
Availability & easily accessibility.
Disadvantages
Terms used differently
Different units of measurement
Data already outdated
Lack of evidence to verify its accuracy
Sources of secondary data
Internal Sources
Example: departmental reports, production summary, financial and accounting reports, marketing and sales reports differ greatly.
The collection methods are unique to the specific situation, and the success depends on knowing where and how to look for these data
Most organizations routinely gather, record, and store internal data as a reference for the future.
Data mining analysis. Help managers to understand the underlying meaning of the data. Example: Market basket analysis.
External Sources
Created, recorded, or generated by an entity
Five categories published data : 💻 Computerized database,📕 Books,📑 Periodicals, 📺Government sources, 👩🏫Miscellaneous sources
The bibliography search
Disadvantages
Silent on quality and impacts
been viewed as something disrupting the flow of thought in an academic work
Advantages
Manually added subject terms. Will find relevant publications
Rigorous quality control & search customization
Can select the priority sources for further studies also see the development of the subject over time, discover the authority sources, and is assured of covering the full range of materials on the subject.
The Computerized Search
Advantages
Up-to-date
Speed & flexibility
Disadvantages
Imprecision & wide capability
Limited sources
Information that has been made available for electronic distribution. Example: Online Database & CD-ROM or Off-line database
Library Search
Advantages
safe refuges for the homeless and underserved populations
offer free educational resources to everyone
Disadvantages
restricted too by the amount of time they can spend with a resource
can be hard to find simple explanations or topic overviews
More Time Consuming and easily know all possible sources of secondary data. Example Computerized database, Books, Periodicals, Government sources, Miscellaneous sources
Evaluate the quality
The evaluation of secondary data comprises of two forms; first, how well does the data fit the research needs, and second, how confident is the researcher with the accuracy and legitimacy of the data.
Before using secondary data, the researcher must know how relevant the data is to research project.
The researcher evaluate the quality of secondary data according to some limitations and disadvantages.
