SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA AND HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE
When Sophie stood up for herself and what she believed in she became young again showing that personal development is more powerful than strong spells.
They both focus on a magical setting which is still similar to earth (land and ocean)
Calcifer and Hoeg ...
The main role of witches and wizards is to protect those who dont have magic.
Wizards and witches go through a sort of schooling
Howl decided not to run from his problems and chose to face them. This is the same with Ged in a Wizard of Earthsea when he faced the shadow.
Strong magicians in earthsea have staffs, Howl doesn't
howl's moving castle also has an element of flying castles where as earthsea doesn't
In Howl’s moving castle, wizards are obliged to report to the king and serve。Whereas, in a Wizard of Earthsea, Wizards are independant.
In Howl's moving castle, there is a large focus on beauty and the heart whereas in the wizard of earth sea there is more focus on real names and purpose.
Both Ged and Sophie change after their encounter with magic.
In a wizard of Earthsea all wizards are taught to use magic for good or bad and not to be selfish. Obviously wizards and witches in Howl's Moving Castle weren't taught this
In Howls moving castle lots of the characters have curses that can only be lifted when they believe in themselves or learn a valuable lesson, much like Ged and his shadow.
The main character isn't a magician in Howl's moving castle but in a wizard of earth sea, they protagonist is a magician.
There was conflict going on (war in Howl's moving castle and the attack from first chapter in A wizard of Earthsea)
Finding purpose is a theme in both stories
Howl had different identities to keep his freedom and Ged wanted to stay hidden in the tower instead. He prefered security over freedom
There is an element of love in Howl's moving castle that isn't really present in a wizard of Earth sea
Sophie had to go into Howls past to help him. Ged had to find out that the shadow was him and he had to overcome his arrogance. Both stories had powerful morals about perspective and learning from the past
Both of the Shadows are a part of the wizard.
The war going on affects both the characters at the beginning but later on, isn't really the main interest. At the beginning of the novel we believe the Kargad will be the antagonist but in the end they are quite irrelevant except for the fact that they changed Ged from a village magician to a renown wizard's apprentice
Ged and Howl both started selfish but became selfless over the course of the book
In Howls moving castle they have basic modern technology like trains and planes, but in A wizard of Earthsea we see mainly boats as a means of transport.
Plot was quite similar however A Wizard of Earthsea had many up and down events that then lead to a climax but Howl's moving castle was more steady
Most people in Howl's Moving Castle have spells on them that they break by developing as a person (e.g: when Sophie stands up for herself she becomes young again. It is deliberately put in by the author to say that standing up for herself and becoming a better person is stronger than the stronger spell.
In A Wizard of Earthsea, Ged has to deal with a similar thing. He realises that the shadow is part of him and that the way to defeat it is to accept that he isn't the best and learns to use magic only when important and not for selfish reasons
Both wizards end the war
