The novel, She, by H. Rider Haggard follows two men, Leo and Holly, exploring an area of Eastern Africa with the mission of finding answers about Leo’s family. While there, they come across a native tribe and their queen, called Ayesha, who has a connection to Leo’s family. Ayesha is clearly an extremely powerful woman, something the men of the Victorian era were not accustomed to. The issue of gender was a major theme throughout the novel, especially since it was viewed from a man's perspective. Ayesha is almost a prototype of the femme fatale, since the male characters know she is deadly, even though they are attracted to her. And so, for the first time, the men need to overcome the woman, a trope unheard of in the Victorian era so far. It takes effort for the male characters to exert their power over Ayesha, taking the idea of the "new woman" to a whole new level.
