        Ultimately it is required of Adan to have sex with Magda because he has to maintain his honour and his reputation.
        
        Magda is not given any free choice in whether or not she sleeps with Adan since he chose her (36 and 39)
        
        Adan is, "sentimental," since he puts the wine from their first date on Magda's grave; but he does not allow himself to mourn her since he needs to focus on his work.

        Adan wants to marry a 17 year old who does not want to be married, but she has no choice in the matter. It is expected of him to have a young 'pure' woman to have a male heir with. (130-131)
        
        Adan is show to have an extreme temper, described several times as having 'snapped' or shouted at Eva because she is too inquisitive.
